Things to do on Long Island during the Garfield Gathering

Long Island boasts a rich and vibrant history. It dates back to the 1500’s and has long been an important area in United States History. Remnants of the past includes Theodore Roosevelt’s House (named Sagamore Hill) the “Gold Coast” Known for elite mansions that inspired “The Great Gatsby” and Historic and beautiful Lighthouses. Much of the reason that Long Island is so popular and developed is due to it’s proximity to New York City. The rich and famous would have country retreats on Long Island.  Cornelius Vanderbilt would actually take a sea-plane to work from Centerport Bay to Manhattan.  
 
Long Island can be separated into four regions:

North Shore is known for its mansions and harbor side villages
South Shore is famous for its sandy beaches and ocean waves
North Fork is home to many wineries and farm country
South Fork includes the world famous Hamptons more beaches and quaint villages

Forget the past. Let’s think about having a great time in 2011:
